"Letters are not mere human conventions, but are the appearances of the Consciousness in forms suitable to the nature of the Tattvas. They are, therefore, truly existent."

- Sir John Woodroffe

Sir John Woodroffe (1865–1936), writing under the pseudonym Arthur Avalon, was a British jurist, scholar, and translator who became one of the West’s foremost interpreters of Tantra and Indian esotericism in the early 20th century. Though trained in law and deeply rational in temperament, he developed a profound interest in Sanskrit texts, Sakta philosophy, and the hidden layers of meaning embedded in Indian spiritual traditions.

Garland of Letters, one of his most influential works, is not merely a study of Sanskrit phonetics or linguistics, it is a metaphysical treatise on how sound, language, and consciousness interrelate in the Tantric vision of the cosmos. It presents the Sanskrit varnas (letters) not only as linguistic units, but as expressions of Sakti, the Divine Creative Power.

This book explores the idea that the universe is born of sound, not just physical sound, but sabda, the vibrational matrix underlying all of existence. At its core, the text teaches that the Sanskrit alphabet is a map of consciousness, and when engaged through mantra, yantra, and sadhana, it becomes a living path to the Self (Atman) and the Supreme (Siva).

Woodroffe unites Sanskrit linguistics, Tantric cosmology, metaphysics, and practical yogic instruction into a cohesive system that traces the evolution of consciousness from the unmanifest to the manifest, and then guides the aspirant back home.

Here are the key teachings and concepts:

Sabda and Sakti: Sound as Power
  • All manifestation begins with Sabda Brahman, the Divine as sound.

  • The letters (varnas) of the Sanskrit alphabet are forms of Sakti, representing different vibrational powers of the Divine Mother.

  • Every letter is a tattva, or principle of reality, and not a mere phonetic tool.

The Sanskrit Alphabet as a Map of the Cosmos
  • The 50 Sanskrit letters correspond to the 50 petals on the chakras, revealing the deep connection between phonetics and subtle body anatomy.

  • Each letter has:

    • A name (e.g., a-kāra, ka-kāra)

    • A place of articulation (e.g., guttural, labial)

    • A governing chakra and associated element

    • A role in the unfolding of Sakti through Nada (sound vibration), Bindu (point of origin), and mantra.

Kamakala and the Triangle of Creation
  • Kamakala is the mystical triangle composed of three bindus:

    1. Karma Bindu (action)

    2. Nada Bindu (vibration)

    3. Bija Bindu (seed)

  • Each of the three syllables Aim, Hrim, and Klim is associated with one of these points, representing Divine Will, Knowledge, and Action.

  • This triangle is the blueprint of manifestation, rooted in Kundalini Sakti.

Bija Mantras and Letters of Power
  • Bija mantras are seed syllables containing concentrated spiritual force (e.g., Hrim, Klim, Sah).

  • Woodroffe devotes several chapters to decoding the kalas (creative powers) embedded in these mantras.

  • He connects each bija to:

    • Divine qualities

    • Cosmic functions (creation, preservation, destruction)

    • Chakras, deities, and cardinal directions

Mantra, Mind, and Consciousness
  • Mantra is not merely repetition, it is the manifestation of consciousness through sound.

  • Proper practice of mantra draws the mind inward, dissolving duality and awakening latent power.

  • The true mantra arises from silence and leads back into it.

Integration with the Chakras
  • Each letter activates a specific chakra petal, encoding energy into the subtle body.

  • Chakras are energized not just by visual symbols but by sound-vibration.

  • The upward journey of Kundalini Sakti is guided and unlocked through mantra and focused attention on these petals.

Atma-Sadhana: The Final Goal
  • All philosophy and technique are only meaningful when they culminate in self-realization.

  • Atma-Sadhana means “the spiritual practice of the Self.”

  • The practitioner eventually transcends even mantra, yantra, and form, entering the realm of non-dual awareness (turiya).

  • This is liberation: not escape, but complete realization of Unity.

Even if you’re just beginning your spiritual path or have a modest understanding of Tantric or Vedic philosophy, the wisdom of Garland of Letters can enrich your journey. Here's how to bring its teachings into your daily practice:

Learn the Varṇas
  • Study the Sanskrit alphabet, not just phonetically but spiritually.

  • Explore each letter’s chakra, color, articulation point, and associated energy.

  • You can make flashcards or use chanting as a form of meditation.

Use Bija Mantras with Intention
  • Choose a bija mantra that resonates with your spiritual goal (e.g., Hrim for inner illumination, Sah for connection to higher guides).

  • Chant it with breath awareness and focus on the corresponding chakra or element.

Meditate on the Kamakala Triangle
  • Visualize the sacred triangle with its three points: Aim (top), Hrim (left), Klim (right).

  • Place these in your awareness with respect to your intention and connection to Sakti.

Refine Listening through Nada Yoga
  • Cultivate inner silence and listen to inner sound (nada).

  • Practice japa or silent mantra repetition, then rest in the space between repetitions.

  • This deepens absorption and leads toward the unstruck sound (anahata nada).

Return to Stillness
  • Let all forms and sounds dissolve into awareness of Being.

  • This is not the negation of the world but the embrace of its true unity.

  • Rest in santa: stillness, clarity, and peace.

Garland of Letters is a mystical, philosophical, and practical map of the human being as a cosmic microcosm. Through the sacred science of sound and letter, Sir John Woodroffe reveals a vision of the universe as a living hymn, each of us a stanza, each breath a sacred syllable, and each realization a return to the One.

Whether you're chanting AUM for the first time or exploring the bindus of kamakala, this work reminds us that divine consciousness pulses through every letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, and, by extension, through every fiber of our being.
