“As the heavens are harmonized with the earth, so are the influences of the stars with human affairs; for the celestial order and its motions are not separate from the natural order of life.” – Claudius Ptolemy

Astrology is an ancient practice that explores the relationships between celestial phenomena and human experiences. Rooted in the observation of planetary movements, astrology seeks to understand how cosmic patterns influence personality, behavior, and events on Earth.

Astrology dates back to ancient Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE, where early astrologers observed celestial events to predict seasonal changes and natural phenomena. The practice evolved through Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations, each adding layers of philosophical and mathematical sophistication. The Greeks introduced the concept of the Zodiac, while Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos became a foundational text, formalizing astrological principles.

Astrology and astronomy were once inseparable, both forming parts of the Quadrivium—four liberal arts subjects in classical education, alongside arithmetic, geometry, and music. Over time, astronomy became a distinct scientific discipline, while astrology maintained its symbolic and interpretive roles.

The Planets: Urges and Needs

In astrology, planets represent fundamental drives and needs:

  • ☉ Sun: Core identity, ego, and life purpose. Cycle: 1 year. Rules Leo (♌), 5th House.

  • ☽ Moon: Emotions, instincts, subconscious. Cycle: ~28 days. Rules Cancer (♋), 4th House.

  • ☿ Mercury: Communication, intellect, reasoning & travel. Cycle: ~88 days. Rules Gemini (♊, 3rd House) and Virgo (♍, 6th House).

  • ♀ Venus: Love, beauty, pleasure & harmony, values. Cycle: ~225 days. Rules Taurus (♉, 2nd House) and Libra (♎, 7th House).

  • ♂ Mars: Action, desire, aggression & energy. Cycle: ~687 days. Rules Aries (♈), 1st House.

  • ♃ Jupiter: Expansion, growth, wisdom. Cycle: ~12 years. Rules Sagittarius (♐, 9th House) and Pisces (♓, 12th House).

  • ♄ Saturn: Discipline, responsibility, structure & limitations. Cycle: ~29.5 years. Rules Capricorn (♑, 10th House) and Aquarius (♒, 11th House).

  • ♅ Uranus: Innovation, rebellion, sudden change. Cycle: ~84 years. Rules Aquarius (♒), 11th House.

  • ♆ Neptune: Dreams, spirituality, illusion. Cycle: ~165 years. Rules Pisces (♓), 12th House.

  • ♇ Pluto: Transformation, power, death &rebirth/regeneration. Cycle: ~248 years. Rules Scorpio (♏), 8th House.

Retrograde occurs when a planet appears to move backward in the sky due to Earth's relative motion. It symbolizes periods of reflection, review, and reassessment. Mercury retrograde, for example, often disrupts communication and technology.
